2009 Conference Wrap-Up
THINKING BIG at the INA Annual Conference in Dallas, TX
Submitted by Nettie Weber, INA Board Member and PR Chair

Everything’s bigger in Texas and it’s a good thing! The 2009 INA Annual Conference proved to be bigger and better than ever! Attendees came from all over the country to “Think Big,” improve their skills and increase their marketability. And they did, in a big way! As we bid INA Conference 2009 a fond farewell, we thank everyone who made it a success and we congratulate our 2009 INA Nanny of the Year™, MaryAnn X. Meddish of Bloomfield Hills, MI, for a job well done. Her acceptance speech brought tears to many eyes as she shared what it meant for her to be honored as INA’s Nanny of the Year™. We also acknowledged nominee Marcia Hall of Milwaukee, WI, a nanny turned new mom who is another shining example of the type of caregiver today’s professional nanny is. These two nannies, on a daily basis, promote and exemplify what we strive for at INA: Excellence, professionalism, integrity and a passion for always continuing to learn. INA’s Nanny of the Year™ nominees strive to be the best that they can be and serve as role models for others in our industry.

From first-time attendees to those who haven’t missed an INA conference in more than 20 years, here’s some insight to what 2009 INA Conference attendees thought of this years event:

1st Year INA Member

“I found INA online while searching for resources on nanny salaries. I immediately learned that there was a whole world to nannying that I never knew existed in all of the years that I had been nannying. INA opened the nanny world up to me and showed me that there was more out there and that there was an actual nanny community. After attending the conference, I was blown away! I expected good things from it, but I left with a brand new vision for my career and excitement for my profession. I learned how to gather other local nannies and form my own small community at home. The conference offered validation and what touched me most was that there was a whole group of people across the nation who knew me, appreciated me and understood me. The conference was full of people searching for excellence in their career. It was empowering and life changing for me. I’m hooked on INA from here on out.”

“I could immediately tell that INA was an organization full of friendly, outgoing, fun people who were ready to answer my questions. The conference gave me confirmation that I was headed in the right direction with my agency planning and I met so many wonderful people that I know that I can just pick up my phone and reach out to on any given day, from across the country. It’s hard to talk with local agents because we have a very locally competitive industry, it seems, and now I almost have “co-workers.” If you are serious about the nanny industry and linking yourself to the most professional people, join INA and go to the conferences. I was exposed to great tools, picked up information that I don’t think I could have gotten anywhere else, and just met the most terrific people that I had so much fun with. I will forever be an INA conference attendee.”

“I wasn’t expecting that everyone would be so friendly and welcoming. I was actually pretty shocked to be accepted with open arms. The workshops were great, the speakers were top-notch and it was awesome to share this all with people that had the same level of passion for childcare that I do. I have an addiction to learning and researching things and when I found out I was immersed in an environment where all I was doing was learning all day long, from everyone — I was hooked. INA makes me feel so educated and with the variety of topics the conference had — everything from middle school issues, to colic, to parent coaching, all under one roof — how can I NOT attend every year from here on out? At the end of the day everyone wants to be valued and earn more money. INA gives you the wheels to achieve that.”

“This is my 2nd conference, 2 years in a row. All these years I’ve been an INA member, I never really knew what went on at INA conferences. Sure I’d seen the pictures and read a little, but that was about it. Business was doing well and I thought that I really didn’t think I needed to attend. I didn’t realize exactly how much it would benefit me until I was there, for the first time, in 2008! I attended because my business dropped off a bit and I was hoping to gain a few ideas. I now have a huge wealth of information that I would have never had, if I had not attended a conference. Even after being a business owner for 20 years, I still came back with pages and pages of items to share with my employee and we sat right down and started talking and brainstorming and implementing! The key items that conference offered me were networking and marketing tips that I would have never came up with. It pushed me to do things that I had thought about doing but just hadn’t yet. Yes, I’m coming back next year.”

9 year INA Member (a founding member of INA in ’85)
1991 INA Nanny of the Year™
5 Year INA Board member

“I was a founder of NAN and when that folded in 2005, I was really burnt out and just tired, ready for someone else to do things in the nanny world. As years went on, something was missing from my life. I promised Harriet Grant (the 1990 NOTY™) that I’d never let people forget her in the nanny world. I felt compelled to keep my promise and couldn’t let myself not be a member of INA. If you want to change something, you have to be on the train to make a difference. So I got on the train again. I needed to get my feet wet and feel that sense of validation of my career again that you just can’t get elsewhere. The sessions at this conference were fabulous. I couldn’t choose! Everything was well put together, right on target and spoke to both new and seasoned nannies. INA connects me to a bigger part of my career and provides me with the best professional resources — because no one ever stops growing. For anyone on the fence about joining INA and attending INA Conferences: What you get out of anything, is what you put into it. You find the money for what’s important to you. Some people buy iPhones, Blackberries, new purses and other goodies … It’s not about spending money, it’s about investing in your career in this case and ensuring that you are the best that you can be at what you do. If you care about our industry, INA is a major part of that.”
