Ms. Ann Compton, ABC News White House Press Correspondent
 |
Ms. Ann Compton is now covering a sixth U.S. president for ABC News in a career that has taken her to the White House, Capitol Hill, and through eight presidential campaigns, from the height of the Cold War to the Internet revolution. And she has now been elected president as well by her colleagues. Ann becomes president of the White House Correspondents Association this summer.
Her career in the national limelight has been awarded a prestigious place at the National Museum of Broadcasting. Ms. Compton was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame at ceremonies in November 2005. |
On Sept 11, 2001, her experience was put to the test as the only broadcast reporter allowed to remain onboard Air Force One during the dramatic hours when President Bush was unable to return to Washington. Her reports during the crisis were cited by ABC News and received the prestigious Silver Baton Alfred I. DuPont Columbia University award for its coverage. Ms. Compton was also on the team that received an Emmy and a Peabody award for ABC News' September 11th reporting.
Weeks after the Watergate scandal came to an end, Ms. Compton became the first woman assigned to cover the White House by a television network, and she was one of the youngest to receive the assignment.
She has traveled around the globe and through all 50 states with presidents, vice presidents, and First Ladies, reporting for all ABC News broadcasts. Twice during campaigns Ms. Compton was invited to serve as a panelist for presidential debates (1988 and 1992) and she was assigned as a floor reporter at the 1976 Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
As the Internet surged in popularity, Ms. Compton became chief Washington correspondent for ABCNews.com where she wrote and anchored a daily political column On Background. Currently, she also holds the title of national correspondent for ABC Radio News, heard daily on thousands of ABC Radio stations as she covers the White House.
She began her broadcasting career in Virginia where an internship at Hollins College (now University) led to a fulltime job reporting for WDBJ TV, a CBS affiliate in Roanoke. Ann established a State Capitol Bureau in Richmond for the station. In 1973, ABC News hired Compton and she reported from New York until December 1974 when she was assigned to the White House.
In June 2000, the Society of Professional Journalists inducted Ann Compton into the Journalism Hall of Fame in Washington DC. She was chairman of the governing board of the Radio Television Correspondents Association in 1987-88 and served on the advisory board of the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center in New York. Ms. Compton says her most valued award is a golden statuette from the National Mothers’ Day Committee naming her a Mother of the Year in 1988. Ann Compton is married to Dr. William Hughes, a physician in Washington, D.C., and they are the parents of three sons and a daughter. Her four kids are now in college.

Panel discussion led by Bob King, Esq., Founder, Legally Nanny® and Alan Friedman, President, A Choice Nanny and INA 2nd Vice President. Facilitated by Pat Cascio, President of Morningside Nannies and INA
While the nanny industry is certainly high-risk, to date it is basically unregulated. The days may be numbered before our federal, local and state governments turn their attention to our industry; indeed, some cities have already attempted to pass new legislation on this front. How would regulation impact our industry and what do we, the experts in the industry, want or dread when it comes to mandated regulations? This workshop will give you the opportunity to join in a spirited discussion with two attorneys who understand the in-home child care industry inside and out.

Name Branding & Marketing of the Placement Agency
Presented by Genevieve Thiers, President, Sittercity.com
The rise of internet nanny and babysitter-matching services has altered the way parents look for care. But instead of being threatened by the rise of Internet matching services, agencies should look at how to exploit this new change in childcare to their own advantage. This talk will show agencies how to juxtapose their offerings against those of the online world, describe how agencies can incorporate “touches” of the online world into their offline businesses to maximum effect, and describe how agencies can utilize large online childcare databases to grow their bottom line.
 |
Genevieve Thiers is the founder and CEO of Sittercity, Inc., America's first company to take babysitting services online. A babysitter who worked her way through Boston College babysitting for over 30 families, Thiers pitched Sittercity to Boston investors in 2001 and was told “We don't fund babysitting clubs.” Undaunted, Thiers begged her dad for $120 to buy the Sittercity.com domain and distributed 20,000 flyers through the city of Boston on foot, recruiting babysitters from more than 20 local colleges while working a full time job at IBM and singing opera at night.
Five years later, Sittercity.com now has over half a million users nationally including hundreds of thousands of sitters, and serves a huge cross-section of American parents with its online database and popular SpeedSitting events. Genevieve was recently recognized by President Bush at the White House as the Small Business Administration Young Entrepreneur Champion of the Year for 2006, and Genevieve has done hundreds of appearances as a childcare expert on TV, radio, and in print outlets including multiple appearances on the Today Show, Martha Stewart Living Radio, the CBS Early Show, CNN, Live & Style, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Redbook, Parents, Parenting, Better Homes and Gardens, and Working Mother. Prior to her Sittercity experience Genevieve worked for IBM. She is also a former Big Bird, holds a master's degree in opera and is a professional opera singer in the Chicago area. |

Watching for Blind Spots: A Frank Conversation about Culture, Race, and Diversity
Presented by Dr. Edward Cannon, Assistant Professor, Marymount University
In today's world, the old "Leave it to Beaver" model no longer fits. You will learn about various family systems, and dialogue about the challenges and opportunities that come with today's families.

Nanny’s Secret Book: Health,
Behavior, and Natural Remedies
Presented by Zoya Bachin, Health & Nutrition SuperNanny,
Food Therapy Specialist, and Cooking Instructor, MedicineChef.com/nanny.html
Zoya Bachin will present practical and useful information on how
to handle childhood health and behavior issues with natural and nutritional methods.
She will show
ways to adjust and modify children’s food intake to create
a positive effect on their health, behavior, sleep pattern,
attention span and learning abilities. Participants will learn techniques
to control and even reverse imbalances that cause symptoms such as a 'tummy
ache', bed-wetting,
hyperactivity, sleeplessness, skin rashes, acne, asthma, obesity,
and many other ‘mysterious’ symptoms. Some of the highpoints
of this presentation will include:
- What foods are responsible for 90% of allergy reactions
- How to read a child’s body language, facial and vocal expressions to recognize signs of distress
- What foods and food additives can produce or exacerbate symptoms
such as excessive screaming, crying, sleeplessness, stuffy nose,
excess mucus, and abnormal behavior
- What ingredients to avoid to insure sound and peaceful sleep
- What are most common sources of contamination
- How to prepare quick home remedies
- How to create delicious and health supporting meals
Health and well being of a child is directly related to nutrition and food habits, and, although natural preventative approach may seem unorthodox to some, in the eyes of a parent or a nanny it’s the result that counts.

Kathy Dupuy is founder and President of Mom’s Best Friend Agency (MBF), one of Texas’s oldest and most successful full-service household staffing agencies. As a busy mother of four (two of whom are infant twins), she is also her own best client and a first-hand advocate for the valuable role nanny professionals play in helping to alleviate many of the daily stresses that can interrupt quality time between parents and their children. A graduate in political science from Vanderbilt University, Kathy started out working with national organizations focusing on pro-family policy initiatives. She later brought this experience to her role as sole owner and President of MBF Agency after becoming increasingly disappointed by the quality of nanny services available to families in Austin, Texas. Seeing the need in Austin for an agency that would raise local families’ expectations of the services provided by professional caregivers, Kathy opened MBF Agency in 1994. As its clients’ needs evolved, MBF Agency has grown into more lines of household service, including household staffing and corporate backup child care. Kathy has been married to her husband, Stuart, for 13 years, and she regularly supports several community service organizations, including Young Life and Settlement Home. |

Sleep Training
Presented by Tonya Sakowicz, Infant Specialist and Sleep Trainer, Parent Consultant
We all value a good night’s sleep, and we know the benefits of sound sleep for children. A recent article in the New York Times discussed the rising demand for sleep consultants because sleep issues concerning children are abundant these days. Those of us who work with children can learn how to effectively communicate the importance of good sleep habits to parents and teach them how to help their children learn to fall asleep and stay asleep. In this workshop we will examine sleep philosophies; the basic physiology of human sleep; what experts have to say about how much sleep children need; where children should sleep; and what you can do to help babies learn to have better sleep habits starting from the day they come home from the hospital.
This class will focus primarily on sleep issues of infants and young toddlers, but time will be available to answer questions and address sleep issues with children up to age five. We will talk about the “family bed,” to cry it out or not to cry it out, how to facilitate a great sleep environment, and some routines that may seem wonderful at the time, but may lead to bad habits. In short, we will tackle all the major issues related to sleep training in this in-depth session.
